A bit of History
Origins and Foundation
The castle of Sermugnano has its roots in the Lombard period, built by the will of Desiderius, the last Lombard king, in the 8th century. Its strategic position on a tuff spur at 346 meters above sea level, between the Fosso Cieco and Rio Chiaro streams, made it a crucial military outpost for controlling the Tiber Valley and the routes between Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany. This hill, already the site of an Etruscan settlement (7th–5th centuries BC) and later Roman, was chosen for its natural defensibility and panoramic views over the vineyards and surrounding mountains.
Medieval and Renaissance Transformations
In the Middle Ages, the castle played a central role in the defense of the territory, with strong walls and a concentric structure around Piazza Castello. During the Renaissance, it lost its military function and became a noble residence, enriched with architectural elements such as vaulted ceilings, monumental fireplaces, and loggias. The Monaldeschi family, a powerful dynasty in the Tuscia region, governed it until the 15th century, leaving their mark on the urban fabric and the churches of the village.
The Castle Today
Now integrated into the fabric of the village, the castle is an example of careful restoration, where historical elements such as stone walls and exposed beams coexist with modern comforts. Its commanding position makes it a privileged viewpoint over the Via del Vino della Teverina and the nature trails leading to Lake Bolsena and Civita di Bagnoregio.
